“Musings on Love and love…”

Ah, love…  The poet’s nemesis and greatest inspiration.  The mystic’s driving force.  The cynic’s least favorite subject.  The humans’ most addictive pursuit.  And still, it remains ephemeral, hard to define, mislabelled and misinterpreted…

For me, there are many signs, symptoms and levels co-mingled in this divinely human emotion, expressed through a comedy of errors, unless, or until, a moment of pure revelation occurs.  But such epiphanies rarely last, though I believe their truths remain, adding layers to an already overworked and over-examined concept…

Yet I am compelled by recent experience to explore it once again…

There is a belief that All of Creation is manifested from, and expresses, Love.  Such Love is Divine, Universal, the very essence which infuses All, which unifies All, creating One.  Such Love is not personal or unique to any particular manifestation, being the underlying Source Material from which all of creation arises.

In this sense, and from this perspective, All is exactly as it should be, perfectly expressing its Source, and existing free of judgment.  When our human consciousness engages such Divine expression openly and receptively, we often experience it in its synonomic forms such as Grace, Luck, Synchronicity or Magic, for example.  We simply Know, in that moment, that what we have encountered is so much bigger than us, so much broader in its perspective, so much deeper in its expression…  It simply is.  And its Wholeness is compelling, complex, and life-altering in its simplicity…

For an infinitely expressed moment, everything is exactly as it should be…

And then…

And then there is the totally human experience of love, the “little l,” an all-consuming, attention-grabbing, obsession-starting emotion, which drowns out rationality completely, leaving one entirely heart-centered…

In those moments of love experienced, time ceases to have any relevance.  Whatever our plans, obligations or expectations, we Know Nothing beyond that feel-good moment…  We want nothing beyond that feel-good moment!

For me, those moments are always a result of some profound connection…

It’s that experience when you are cat-visiting for an out of town friend, and this animal, whom you have only ever met twice, runs to you to crawl in your lap and purr and cuddle.  For three hours you both sit there, completely content in the perfection of your connection.  And the human in you is only vaguely aware that the other plans you had for the day are being delayed by outside forces.  But you feel no desire to complain because you Know this is exactly where and when you want to be…

It is that moment when your grandson, who has always been afraid of you, looks you in the eye and says, with conviction, “I love you, Grandma Lisa.”  And you know he means it, though you have no idea what has caused this change; nor do you need an explanation…

Or when he asks to follow you outside where you have a conversation about superheroes and super powers.  And when you suggest to him that his ability to make his baby sister smile just by being near her is a superpower, you see a tiny light ignite behind his eyes, shining forth in a smile bigger than his small face can hold.

And you remember the story you started to write when he was born, about a boy growing up to discover what being a “hero” truly means…

It is that moment when your 4 month old granddaughter, sitting contentedly with her father, hears your voice and reaches for you with tiny arms, before you’ve even put your purse down.  When she looks into your eyes and smiles so genuinely, that you know, without doubt, that she is actually seeing you.  And when she giggles, pure baby joy, just because you are together in this moment…

It is that first bite of dinner your daughter cooked that is pure ecstasy, when you are convinced that nothing, absolutely nothing, has ever tasted so good!

Or that fraction of a second when guilt sets in because you are savoring the meal while your daughter waits her turn.  Because someone needs to hold the child, after all.  And when you offer to trade places, your daughter looks you in the eye and says,”take your time, Mom; there’s really nothing else I’d rather be doing right now.”  And you know, absolutely, that she means it, as her daughter drifts off to sleep in her arms…

Human experiences all…  And all of them a part of my day yesterday.  Hours and hours of moments so pure and perfect that Time had no hold on me…

I have heard it said recently and repeatedly that all “collectives” are bad, depriving individuals of freedom and self-empowerment, enslaving us all.  And while I understand what is being said, and agree with the conclusions reached, I remain dedicated to a belief in a Universal One.

For I believe in…  And I experience… that profound moment of connection with creation in many forms; that precise intersection where Love and love meet and greet each other on the road.  For all creation is Divine, whether it appears to experience consciousness like myself, or experiences existence in some way incomprehensible to me, like a stone, or a sea, or a breeze.  And in those seconds of revelation, when Love and love coincide, I experience their existence as concrete and real as my own…

That is L-love…  And that is Me.  For I am Love.  Eternally…

  1. As I read through your experience with Love and love – I began to hear music. I “listened” to what was being played and this is what came out of it:

If you have the time, listen to it and enjoy…

    • Wow! What an incredible gift you have given me here, Sha’Tara! Tears are streaming down my face; tears of joy and deep reverence. Music so often coveys what words cannot express…

I can think of no higher compliment to give a writer than to tell them their words evoke a connection to such beautiful music.

      Thank you for this! 🙂

  2. Oliver A. Melendez says:

All i can say with this piece is “only love can set us free…” from Sophie B. Hawkins track, “the ballad of sleeping beauty” from the album ‘Whaler
